Can alcohol be stored in mineral water bottles? Why?
Storing alcohol in mineral water bottles is generally not recommended for the following reasons:
1. Material Compatibility: Most mineral water bottles are made of PET plastic, which is designed for single-use beverages. Alcohol, especially high-proof spirits, may interact with the plastic over time, potentially leaching chemicals or altering the taste of the drink.
2. Legal and Safety Concerns: Transferring alcohol into unlabeled containers can be illegal in some regions due to labeling regulations. It also poses risks of accidental consumption, particularly by children or unaware individuals who mistake the liquid for water.
3. Storage Quality: PET bottles are not airtight or UV-resistant, leading to oxidation and light exposure. This can degrade the alcohol’s flavor and aroma, especially for wines or aged spirits that require proper storage conditions.
Short-term use (e.g., a few hours) might be acceptable for convenience, but long-term storage should always use glass containers or purpose-designed bottles to preserve safety and quality.
